Playing with Audacity on Kubuntu

I was rather bored with coding stuff, so I start trying to record some audio with the most common and sophisticated tools for audio recording — Audacity.

It was pretty easy installing it, since I was using Kubuntu 18.04, I was able to install it by using command line :

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install audacity

and run the app by typing :

audacity

anywhere in the console. For windows and mac user, there’s installer for each of you in .exe and .dmg so don’t worry.

After few minutes installation, here’s what it’s look like :

Audacity

I was able to record nicely with my cheap microphone which automatically detected by the app. There’s just an issue on initial install where the input mic is too loud, which made the sound got clipped and sound kinda distorted, and I managed to fix it by reducing my microphone input from -40db to around -55db.

Next issue would be noise. I was recording in a small 3x3 room with high noise from outside street. With simple search, I found out some ways to reduce the noise by using the “Noise reduction” tools under Effect tab.

It sounded way better, but with trade-off of smaller voice output. I think there’s more to this effect and configs which can be searched further.

I also interested in making my voice more better with the famous “auto-tune” sound effect by using the tools provided by the app, this can come later.

Finally, overall, it’s a good app, I might use it for later if I had a chance for vlogging or creating podcast/tutorials video for My Youtube channel. I would recommend it for a low-end device because of its size and feature, also good for learning on sound/audio mixing if you’re a beginner.
